Embracing the unknown has always been a challenge for me. I typically find comfort in the familiar and predictable routines of daily life such as going to work, reading books at home, and cuddling with my pets. That all changed last week during a transformative trip to Costa Rica with my husband. The week was packed with thrilling adventures that pushed me to confront my fears and grow as a person. From horseback riding through lush landscapes to exhilarating ziplining, I learned valuable lessons about courage and the beauty of stepping outside my comfort zone.
How to Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
Embracing the Unknown
Before our trip, I was filled with doubts and worries. The week leading up to our departure was plagued with "what ifs." What if I couldn't keep up? What if I fell or hurt myself? What if I had an asthma attack on the trail? To manage my apprehension, I practiced breathing techniques to calm my mind. This simple act helped me stay grounded, allowing me to face my fears head-on.
The combination of these techniques and prayer also eased my mind. I felt comforted asking the Lord for protection during our adventures. I discovered that embracing the unknown doesn't mean ignoring fear; it means finding effective tools to cope with it.
Horseback Riding Through Nature
One of our first activities was horseback riding. As we prepared to mount our horses, I felt butterflies in my stomach. It took me a second to get on my horse but as soon as I was on, a sense of freedom overcame my anxiety. My horse's name was Princess and she was an angel to ride.

Trotting along stunning trails filled with vibrant flowers and rolling green hills brought me immense joy. The air was fresh, and the views were breathtaking. I realized that embracing discomfort often leads to beautiful and rewarding experiences.
Zipping Through the Trees
Next on the agenda was ziplining. I was terrified the entire way there. I could hear my heart racing and my thoughts telling me that I couldn't do it, but I focused on my breathing and repeated to myself that this would be an unforgettable experience.
When I finally took the leap off the platform, my fears vanished in an instant! The adrenaline rush was unforgettable, and I was rewarded with stunning views of Costa Rica's jungles and valleys below. We flew over the La Fortuna waterfall and it was a sight I will never forget.
Rafting Through Rapids
Another thrilling adventure was white water rafting. I have a major fear of drowning so this was a big deal for me. My husband has experience white water rafting, but I was incredibly nervous. We hit a lot of intense rapids but our boat handled the water with ease. Along the way, I learned that it was no longer just about my individual fears; I had to trust my team and listen to our guide. We met so many people around the world on this trip--in just our boat alone, we had people from China and Uruguay. It's a reminder that shared experiences can transform fear into joy and connection.
Culinary Adventures: A Taste of Costa Rica
No trip to Costa Rica would be complete without savoring local cuisine. Throughout our trip, I tried dishes I had never tasted before, such as fresh ceviche and gallo pinto. Each meal was an adventure, a step further out of my culinary comfort zone. I enjoyed interacting with locals who shared the stories behind their dishes. The phrase "Pura Vida" was everywhere—a symbol of the Costa Rican way of life that encourages gratitude and enjoyment. Exploring flavors from unknown dishes opened my heart and mind, reminding me of how rich life can be when we embrace the unfamiliar, even in food.

Reflections on My Experience
Looking back on my trip, I have learned to slow down and embrace life's unpredictability. Each day served as a reminder of the personal growth possible when stepping into the unknown.
I began to grasp how limiting my comfort zone had been. Exposing myself to new experiences helped me manage my fears rather than avoid them. This journey allowed me to incorporate movement and mindfulness into my daily life, practices that encourage personal exploration.
